Venue: Online. Due to COVID-19, many music concerts have been cancelled - but not this one! The organizer HK Folk managed to pull off its annual event Folk Music Marathon with live streaming technology reaching out to audience throughout HK and worldwide. D’Spectacles was one of 26 music groups performing online with pre-corded performance. D’Spectacles played Nowhere Man (Beatles), If (Bread), Temple of the King (Rainbow) and Just A Song Before I Go (CSN). Given that we were not able to meet each other, audio and video production had been done individually and files transfer! All in all, it was an enjoyable and unique experience. D’Spectacles had taken the opportunity of its forthcoming 40th anniversary to premiere a special review of the journey of the Group since its formation in 1981.
Boat On The River (Styx) cover
With continued COVID-19 restriction, delivering singing performance online has become the new normal. In conjunction with the launch of D’Spectacles Facebook page, we made a studio version of Boat On The River (Styx) which was our Pop Folk contest winning song on 22nd January 1981 when D’Spectacles made its first official public appearance. This studio version was delivered together with a self-made video which combined the video clip of a stage performance in the 80’ with the latest audio track. It was worth the effort to make the music video. It brought us back some good memories as we embarked on the 40th anniversary of the formation of D'Spectacles.
Battles (Axe) cover
Exactly 40 years ago on 28th February 1981 we performed this song in a folk concert called 大型民歌二二八. Don’t think that we ever played this song again on stage. The 40th anniversary of the band is a great opportunity to revisit the good songs that we have overlooked and is worth the efforts for a studio production with full music arrangement. Battles is necessarily one of those. Though the introduction is 1”18” long, music video with coherent images – in this case a windy desert in the middle of the night – has helped build up the song’s atmosphere.
The Logical Song (Supertramp) cover
The Logical Song, released by an English rockband Supertramp in 1979. D’Spectacles performed the song back in 1981 in aconcert named 大型民歌三二四 on 24 March 1981 with two vocals and two acoustic guitars. The song has a beautiful melody and magical lyrics that connected instantly toaudience, addressing the evolving stages of life from innocent childhood, through confused adolescence to disillusioned adulthood. Again The Logical Songis another great song we have not played even one more time since then. Torevisit our journey, we decided to cover the song again in a studio versionfollowing mostly the original arrangement – though we had to deliver theinterlude instrumental solo with guitar (we’ll incorporate saxophone in futureopportunity) and we added our own version of vocal harmony.
愛的昇華 (music: 白い夏バレンシア by The Alfee | Lyrics: Kenny Wong )
This song “愛的昇華”is a piece of work by D'Spectacles in the 1980s, which would be classified as “new lyrics, old melody”. At that time, Hong Kong was in the midst of a boom of local band and local music work; and The Alfee Japanese folk rock and multi-parts vocal harmony styles attracted D’Spectacles. We wrote Chinese lyrics on The Alfee's "白い夏バレンシア"melody and took it to the stage as our "own song". D'Spectacles' last public performance of “愛的昇華 was at the Telford Pop Concert in 1986. 35 years later in 2021, we took the opportunity to record it in our home studio and activated this long-buried old song. It not only triggered our members’ past memories, but also left behind another new "footprint" for the band journey! We hope this song “愛的昇華” that is brought over literally from the last century will find its followers.
D’Spectacles has embarked on its journey to roll out original songs that have been composed by the Group over the years. 唱盡人心意 is a piece of music worked collaborate by the Group; Kenny composed the music (while in the US) and Johnny wrote the lyrics in HK during the period of 2000’. The song has a folk style with a swing feel rhythm, featuring acoustic guitar and progressive vocal harmony arrangement and conveying positive energy through the high-impact lyrics. The song arrangement is one that has been mostly conceived during the melody writing phase – including that of the swing feel and walking bass. While the guitar solo part was a complete new development, the song embedded the influence of Jerry Reed in some of the guitar fill-in as developed in the original arrangement ideas. The vocal harmony arrangement was carefully crafted note-by-note to enhance the flavor of the chord progression.
D'Spectacles releases a new song <回味> to pay tribute to the 80s Cantopop songs of Hong Kong. There is no better way to produce a new song of the 80s by doing it with raw ingredients of the 80s! The new song just released by D'Spectacles has its melody composed and lyrics written back in1989. Special thanks to Mr. Chan Siu Kei who had written the song for us in just a day back in 1989 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tWjLO0sBOm0&t=2s
and it has taken us D'Spectacles 32 years to bring this song to life! The song is officially released today and we hope that it is worth the wait! The song's arrangement, including a long guitar solo outro, together with the crafted MV, attempted to create the images of the lyrics written.
D’Spectacles made its 10th appearance at the 香港友FOLK 2021 音樂會 Folk Music Marathon. Under continued impact by the COVID-19, HK Folk once again delivered a great show for the folk lovers worldwide with its creativity and professionalism as evidenced by the high quality production. D’Spectacles performed live in real time four songs: Survival (America), Love’s An Easy Song (Meisburg and Walter), You World and My World (Albert Hammond) and Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon and Garfunkel). Love’s An Easy Song is D’Spectacles long-cherished song in its repertoire and we took the opportunity to play the song in this unique stage ambience.
Kenny Wong had been invited as guest guitarist and harmony vocal singer at the online singing program of WSM Music (環星音樂) hosted by Raymond Young (楊立門) which lasted for 16 Episodes.

Against the background that D’Spectacles had participated in a number of Folk Singing Contest and its band leader Kenny Wong had a passion to bring back the memories of the Folk Contest Songs of the ‘70s/‘80s, and together with the commitment of the active Folk organizations in Hong Kong, namely Hong Kong Folk Club and Ching Wan Folk Group, in promoting folk music to general public in Hong Kong, the Project “ “Hong Kong ‘70s/‘80s Folk Contest Songs - Legacy Series ” was launched which aims to leave behind a legacy to the Hong Kong folk scene. Kenny Wong would pick 20 folk contest songs and roll it out one song after another in three batches. In each song roll-out, there is introduction of the song composer and lyricist, original artist, released year and the contest in which each song was performed; in addition there are also technical analysis of the guitar accompaniment, song arrangement, lead vocal and harmony. The first batch of contest songs consisted of: 1. Ventura Highway, 2. The Bird Man, 3. Leaves That Are Green, 4. Eagle Feather (video 1), 5. Rocky Road (video 2), and 6. Mexican Divorce.

The Hong Kong ‘70s/‘80s Folk Contest Songs Project was completed with 21 favorite folk/folk rock songs rolled out, highlighting the name of contest, the contestant, and the final placement. In addition to the full lyric-chord flow displayed through YouTube video of the original / contest version, each song was given a technical analysis on its arrangement, guitar chord progression and vocal harmony. D’Spectacles has been participating in this major annual folk marathon event by HK Folk Club almost every year since 2011. Each and every year’s participation was a unique experience for us and this year 2023 is no exception. Of the 5 songs we performed, two were original. The run-down was as follows:1. Ventura Highway 2. Her Town Too 3. Now That We’re Older 4. We’ll Be Okay 5. Watching The River. Ventura Highway and Watching The River Run are two songs that we have longed for playing and for the first time D’Spectacles delivered them on stage.
